If you own an eCommerce website you may already know how tough it can be to get your search engine optimization, or SEO, strategy dialed in and to produce results. After trying different tools and examining other businesses large and small, I complied a list of tips and tools I found to be most effective:

Getting your SEO strategy in place for your online business can require a lot of research and testing. That being said, when done correctly, a great keyword strategy can help drive more traffic and ultimately increase sales. Although SEO has the highest ROI of eCommerce marketing campaigns, business owners often overlook the power of search engines and keywords and spend most of their time and efforts on social media and display ads

Most of eCommerce keyword strategy takes place in the product description areas of your site. This is where optimization can start to improve how your products rank on search engines and how many people are seeing your site. The more people that are seeing your products while searching on Google, the more potential you have to get quality traffic to your site.

Good SEO Example

One example of good SEO using product keywords on an eCommerce site is Marucci. Marucci gets the “boring” and technical stuff out of the product description by inserting images and using bullet points after their creative and fun description. This allows them to optimize for keywords within their product description and not worry about SKU numbers, actual dimensions of the bat, or other things that may negatively affect SEO.

Whether you use Shopify, Magento, or Woocommerce for your eCommerce platform, using these tools and increasing efforts in SEO can lead to more traffic and sales for your site:

Tools for SEO

  • Google Keyword Planner: Google’s Keyword Planner is a great tool to find what people are already searching for on Google. Since Google accounts for more searches everyday BY FAR, this tool can help you determine what keywords to use in your product descriptions to help your product pages to rank higher.
  • Typing Product into Google/Amazon: If you don’t have a Google account set up just yet and are still looking for a way to help your SEO, this tip is for you! By typing in your product into Google or Amazon’s search bar, you can see related keywords to your product based on what other people are searching for. By using this simple trick, you can look at SEO as if you were a potential customer looking for your product.
  • SpyFu: Spyfu offers many insightful SEO tools but my favorite is their competitor analysis. Spyfu can help to determine the keywords that your competitors are using and how they’re performing. This will allow you to test your eCommerce site against your competition to know where you need to start improving or if you can capitalize on your competitor’s missed opportunity.

SEO for your eCommerce story can require a lot of time and effort. That being said, it can also drive in quality traffic to your site and help you to have a higher conversion rate for your eCommerce store.
